Massive Protests Shake Greece as Government Tries to Silence the Truth About Tempi

Posted on February 28, 2025July 27, 2025

On February 28, 2025, Greece witnessed one of the largest protests in recent history, as nearly a million people flooded the streets of Athens, with hundreds of thousands more demonstrating across the country and beyond. The sheer number of demonstrators sent a powerful message: the people have not forgotten, and they will not accept a cover-up.

A Peaceful Protest Hijacked by Government Tactics

Despite the overwhelmingly peaceful nature of the demonstration, the Greek government once again employed underhanded tactics to suppress dissent. Authorities banned even licensed drones from capturing footage, effectively restricting the press from documenting the scale of the protest.

Then, as has been witnessed in past protests, a small group of masked individuals suddenly appeared among the police ranks. These individuals began throwing Molotov cocktails and vandalizing buildings, including parts of the historic Great Britain Hotel. This orchestrated chaos gave the government the excuse it needed to unleash violent repression against the peaceful demonstrators.

Brutal Police Crackdown

The police, heavily deployed in riot gear, wasted no time. They fired tear gas, used water cannons, and beat protesters indiscriminately. Reports and footage from the ground showed police charging into crowds, striking citizens who were merely exercising their right to protest.

These tactics are not new. The Greek government has a history of infiltrating peaceful protests with provocateurs to justify state violence. Today was no different, as the authorities sought to paint the demonstration as “violent” while brutally suppressing the voices calling for accountability.

The Demand for Justice

The people of Greece, along with supporters from around the world, are demanding that the government take full responsibility for the Tempi train disaster. The official cover-up, which involved tampering with evidence and hiding the illegal transport of highly flammable gas, has outraged citizens who refuse to let the truth be buried. In its desperate rush to cover up the illegal cargo, the government transported more than 700 tons of mud, contaminated with the illegal gasoline mix and human remains, and secretly dumped it 50 kilometers away from the crash site to erase any trace of its crimes.

Despite government repression, today’s massive turnout proved that the movement for justice is stronger than ever. The people will not be silenced.
