President Nayib Bukele announces a government-wide corruption investigation in El Salvador.

Contrasting Approaches to Corruption: El Salvador and Greece

Posted on March 20, 2025March 20, 2025

Corruption remains a significant issue worldwide, with countries adopting different strategies to address it. A comparison between El Salvador and Greece reveals stark contrasts: while El Salvador has implemented aggressive anti-corruption measures, Greece continues to face scandals and allegations of government misconduct.

El Salvador’s Bold War on Corruption

In November 2023, President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador took an unprecedented step by announcing that his entire executive branch was under investigation for corruption. This move was part of a larger campaign aimed at eradicating corruption within the government.

Bukele also proposed constructing a specialized prison for white-collar criminals, ensuring that financial crimes are met with strict consequences. Earlier in June 2023, during his fourth year in office, he declared a “war against corruption,” leading to the seizure of assets from former officials accused of corrupt practices.

Greece’s Ongoing Struggles with Government Accountability

In contrast, Greece has faced recent challenges with corruption, with multiple scandals eroding public trust:

Tempi Train Collision Cover-Up

On February 28, 2023, a tragic train collision near Tempi resulted in 57 deaths. Investigations revealed severe deficiencies in rail infrastructure, prompting accusations of a government cover-up. Evidence tampering and a lack of accountability among high-ranking officials fueled mass protests across the country.

The Predatorgate Surveillance Scandal

In 2022, reports emerged that Greek politicians and journalists were surveilled using the Predator spyware. The scandal, known as “Predatorgate” or “Greek Watergate,” implicated the National Intelligence Service (EYP), which operates under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister’s office.

Judicial Corruption and Political Impunity

Reports suggest that corruption within the Greek judicial system has allowed the political elite to escape accountability. Critics argue that while ordinary citizens bear the burden of austerity, the ruling class continues to thrive under a system that shields the corrupt.

Conclusion

El Salvador’s aggressive crackdown on corruption starkly contrasts with Greece’s struggles to hold its political elite accountable. While Bukele’s government pushes for transparency and punishment for corrupt officials, Greece continues to face allegations of cover-ups, judicial corruption, and surveillance abuse. These cases highlight the critical need for transparency, accountability, and institutional reforms to combat corruption effectively.
